Blogging Through the Fear June 5, 2009

A Blog by any other name would be a diary, or a journal entry, or an article, right?

I'm trying to get the hang of this new Social Media lexicon, not to mention the tools ... Twitter, Tweet Deck, Facebook, Ning, etc. Looking back at what I just wrote (about the lexicon) makes me think of my grandmother saying the same thing about telephones or television or even the car! Can we imagine what it will be like in years from now when our grandkids are saying that we, their grandparents, had to learn about social media (or whatever they'll call it by then) back in the olden days when they had cell phones instead of fill-in-the-blank technology? They will say this with an incredulous inflection no doubt!

I like to write. So why am I so daunted by the prospect of blogging or tweeting? I guess my blogs-by-other-names had been mostly private. Now, they'll be public - if I want them to be - and that makes me panic. What will I write about that anyone else will give two cents to read (uhm, do they make pennies any more?)? And, will I be followed or will there be subscribers (or whatever you call people who read your blog)?

I guess the language will come as I increase my whatchyamicallit (social media awareness) and listen to what others are saying and watch what they're doing. Until then, I'll just have to take the plunge and just write, 'er I mean blog. What Ever!

Fear! That's what my hesitation boils down to. Or more precisely fears. Fear of the unknown, fear of being judged, fear of getting overwhelmed and quitting, etc. That's a big topic for coaches and clients to discuss and clearly another topic for a blog entry (or whatever you call it when you write one of these things). But the one thing to say about fear is:

  1. Just do it!
  2. Take baby steps!
  3. Celebrate your success!
Well, OK, that's three things! But, hey, I just wrote my first blog! Cool!
Uhm ... now what do I do with it?
